One of several native North American plants referred to as “kinnickinnick” and used as a tobacco substitute by Native Americans. Used over the centuries for basketry, weaving shuttles, farm implements, meat skewers and more! Showy red stems stand out in the winter landscape, and is a host species for native pollinators such as butterflies and bees.
