Also known as the Little Girl Magnolia, this magnolia has the most striking deep red-purple blooms. In the spring these 7-9″ tulip shaped blossoms cover the tree and give off a delicious subtle scent. It is part of the Little Girl Series created at the National Arboretum in the 1950’s by Francis DeVos and William Kosar who crossed M. liliiflora ‘Nigra’ and M. stellata ‘Rosea’. The late blooming nature of this tree means it will be less susceptible to damage from a late frost. In addition, many may also produce a small batch of blooms in the warm months of summer. Depending on your preference, these trees can even be shaped into a shrub. They prefer full sun and can reach 15′ in height and 12′ in width.
