Butternut, White Walnut

Extremely hardy, the Butternut is also known as the white walnut tree.  The nut’s shells can be hard to crack, but the nuts are sweet and oily, enjoyed by both humans and wildlife. Butternut is native to Eastern Canada and the Central and Eastern United States. This tree is usually found in moist bottomlands, lowland forests, swamps, river banks, and some drier limestone soils. Many native stands of this tree have disappeared, caused it to be endangered in certain states. Butternut and Black Walnut trees look very similar, but the fruit of the black wanut will stain your hands. Grows up to 60 feet and can live up tp 75 years.

Pollination: Self-pollinating but it is recommended to plant two or more for better fruit production.
