Description
Betula nigra ‘Heritage’ is an improved variety of river birch, a species of birch native to the Eastern United States. The bark has more white, cream and pale salmon tones that the typical river birch and is a beautiful substitute for the more insect and disease prone European white birch. It is a fast grower with a large, pyramidal, upright habit and looks great when grown in groups. Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. River birch is perhaps the most culturally adaptable and heat tolerant of the birches. A beautiful, multi-branched tree prized for its highly textural, colorful, peeling bark. An exceptional silhouette for night lighting. Provides striking winter interest. This versatile, highly heat tolerant tree thrives in riparian settings with high water tables and problematic low wet soils, yet adapts to mild drought when established. Deciduous.
